Hyperion was once a small place in Los Angeles County, California. It was a stop on a special train line called the Pacific Electric Redondo Beach via Playa del Rey Line. This train line helped people travel around the area. Hyperion was about 33 feet (10 meters) above sea level. You could still find Hyperion on maps from 1934, but it's not there anymore.
What Was Hyperion Pier?
Hyperion Pier was a long structure built into the ocean. It stood in this spot for many years, from before 1912 until after 1937. This pier was very important for the nearby city of Santa Monica.
Why Was the Pier Built?
The main reason for Hyperion Pier was to help with sewage disposal. This means it was part of a system to safely get rid of wastewater from homes and businesses. The pier had a special pipe that carried the wastewater far out into the ocean.
The Special Redwood Pipe
The pier had a very long pipe, about 2,000 feet (610 meters) long. It was made from redwood wood. This pipe was built like a giant barrel, but with straight pieces of wood. An engineer once explained that someone from the wood industry even took a piece of the pipe. They wanted to show how well redwood could last, even when carrying wastewater for a long time.
