Hyperion is a giant coast redwood tree found in California. It is known as the world's tallest living tree. It stands at an amazing 115.85 m (380.1 ft) tall! That's taller than a 35-story building!

Discovering Hyperion

Hyperion was found on August 25, 2006. Two nature explorers, Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, discovered it. Stephen Sillett, an expert on tall trees, confirmed its height.

The tree is located in a hidden part of Redwood National and State Parks. This area was bought by the park in 1978. Scientists believe Hyperion contains about 530 m3 (18,600 cu ft) of wood.

Hyperion's Neighbors and Age

Redwood National and State Parks is home to other very tall trees too. The second tallest tree, Helios, and the third tallest, Icarus, also live there.

Experts like Stephen Sillett think Hyperion is about 600 years old. Other people believe it might be even older, around 700 to 800 years old. Imagine all the history this tree has seen!

Protecting the Tallest Tree

The exact spot where Hyperion grows is kept a secret. This helps protect the tree from too many visitors. Scientists want to make sure the tree stays healthy and safe.

Researchers have noticed some damage at the very top of Hyperion. They think woodpeckers might have caused it. This damage might have stopped the tree from growing even taller.

In February 2012, Hyperion was featured in a BBC Radio 4 show. It was called James and the Giant Redwoods.
