The Hyuganatsu (Citrus tamurana) is a special citrus fruit. It grows mainly in Japan. Its Japanese name, 日向夏, means "summer sun" or "summer from Hyūga". The first part, "Hyūga", comes from an old name for Miyazaki Prefecture. This is a region in Kyūshū, where the fruit first appeared. The second part, "natsu", means summer.

Sometimes, Hyuganatsu grown outside Kyushu are called by other names. These include Konatsu, Tosakonatsu, or New Summer Orange.

Where Hyuganatsu Comes From

The Hyuganatsu fruit has an interesting history. It is believed that a young Hyuganatsu plant was found in a garden. This happened in Miyazaki around the 1820s. After that, people started growing it all over the area.

Scientists think it might be a special kind of change in a yuzu fruit. A mutation is like a natural change in a plant's genes. Another idea is that it's a hybrid. A hybrid plant is created when two different types of plants mix. So, the Hyuganatsu might be a mix of a yuzu and a pomelo fruit.

What Hyuganatsu Looks Like

The Hyuganatsu fruit is usually a medium size. It can be round or a little bit oval in shape. When it is ready to eat, it turns a light yellow color.

The inside of the fruit is juicy and tastes sweet. It also has a slightly sour flavor, which makes it refreshing. People often eat it cut into pieces. They might sprinkle sugar on it. They also usually leave most of its thick white pith on. The pith is the white part between the peel and the fruit. This white part is also tasty with Hyuganatsu.
