Hákun Djurhuus (born 1908, died 1987) was an important political leader in the Faroe Islands. He served as the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 1963 to 1967. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in a country or region. Djurhuus was born in Tórshavn, the capital city of the Faroe Islands.

Early Political Life

Hákun Djurhuus began his political journey in 1946. He was first elected to the Løgting, which is the parliament of the Faroe Islands. Think of it as the main law-making body for the islands.

Roles in Klaksvík

From 1946 to 1951, Djurhuus was a member of the town council in Klaksvík. This is like being on the city council in your town. He even became the mayor of Klaksvík from 1950 to 1951. The mayor is the leader of a town or city government.

Leading the People's Party

Djurhuus was also a very important member of the People's Party (called Fólkaflokkurin in Faroese). This is a political party, which is a group of people who share similar ideas about how the country should be run. He was the chairman, or leader, of this party for a long time, from 1951 all the way until 1980.

National and International Roles

Hákun Djurhuus held several key positions in government.

Serving as Minister and Prime Minister

He served as a minister in the Faroese government from 1951 to 1954. A minister is a high-ranking official in the government, usually in charge of a specific area like education or finance. Later, he became the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, leading the government from 1963 to 1967.

Representing the Faroe Islands in Denmark

Djurhuus also represented the Faroe Islands in the Folketing. The Folketing is the national parliament of Denmark. The Faroe Islands are a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. He was one of two Faroese members elected to the Folketing during two periods: from 1957 to 1960 and again from 1968 to 1973. This meant he helped make decisions for both the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

Later Years

After a long and active career in politics, Hákun Djurhuus decided to step down. He withdrew from political life after the elections in 1980. He passed away on 22 September 1987, at the age of 78.
