Iñaq Uyu, also known as Aklla Wasi, is an ancient site in Bolivia. It is found on the Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon). This island is located in Lake Titicaca, a large lake high in the Andes mountains. The site is in the La Paz Department, near the town of Copacabana.

The name Iñaq Uyu comes from the Aymara people. It means "pen of the iñaqa". An iñaqa was a noble woman in the Inca society. The name Aklla Wasi comes from the Quechua people. It means "house of the chosen ones" or "house of the virgins of the sun".

History of Iñaq Uyu

Iñaq Uyu was built a long time ago, between the years 1000 C.E. and 1500 C.E. This was during the time of the Inca Empire.

Why the Names?

The name Iñaq Uyu suggests that the site might have been a burial place for important Inca women. These women were part of the royal or noble families.

The name Aklla Wasi (House of the Virgins of the Sun) also gives us clues. It might refer to special women called Aklla. These women were chosen to serve the Inca sun god. The site's location on the Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon), away from the larger Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), could be why it was called a "virgin of the sun." It was separate and special.

Location on Lake Titicaca

Iñaq Uyu is one of several important ancient sites on the islands of Lake Titicaca. Other sites like Chinkana and Pillkukayna are on the larger Isla del Sol. Iñaq Uyu, however, stands out because it is on the smaller, more secluded Isla de la Luna. This makes it a unique and mysterious place to explore.
