Işın Funda Büyükkaraca (born March 7, 1973), known as Işın Karaca, is a talented pop singer. She was born in the United Kingdom and has Turkish Cypriot roots. She is also a songwriter, record producer, and actress.

About Işın Karaca

Işın Funda Büyükkaraca was born into a Turkish Cypriot family. Her family had moved to the United Kingdom. Her mother, Şeniz Büyükkaraca, owns a restaurant in Cyprus. Her father, Ali Büyükkaraca, was a real estate agent from Afyon, Turkey. Işın Karaca studied theatre at the London IV King Edward School.

Karaca has two children. Her son, Erda Kıvanç, was born in 1993. Her daughter, Sasha Mia, was born in 2011. In July 2023, Karaca shared that she was diagnosed with alopecia universalis, a condition that causes hair loss. She married musician Can Yapıcıoğlu on October 27, 2023.

Music Journey

Starting Out and Becoming Famous (1997–2004)

Işın Karaca began her music career singing backup for the famous artist Sezen Aksu. In 1997, she sang songs for the Turkish version of Disney's Hercules soundtrack. She also performed with the musical group "Panic Attack" in 1999.

In 2000, she tried to represent Turkey in the Eurovision Song Contest. She sang "Bir Kırık Sevda" and later "Kaderimsin," but she was not chosen. However, she did represent Turkey in the OGAE Second Chance Contest. She also appeared in Sezen Aksu's music videos.

In 2001, Işın Karaca released her first album, Anadilim Aşk (My Native Language is Love). This album was a big success and made her popular across Turkey. Many songs on the album were written by Sezen Aksu. Her songs Tutunamadım and Başka Bahar became very popular. The music video for "Aramıza Yollar" was the first High Definition video in Turkey.

In 2004, she released her second album, İçinde Aşk Var (There's Love Inside). She worked with new writers for this album and even wrote one song herself. The songs Yetinmeyi Bilir misin? and Bekleyelim de Görelim were big hits. She also sang a cover of Sezen Aksu's "Hoşgörü."

New Albums and Styles (2006–2011)

In 2006, Işın Karaca released her third album, 33/3 Başka (Different). She wrote a song for this album too. The songs Mandalinalar, "Kalp Tanrıya Emanet," and "Bırakma" were released as music videos.

In 2007, she sang "The Final Countdown" with Dolapdere Big Gang. This was her first song officially recorded in English. In 2008, she sang "Unutama Beni" for the TV series "Elif."

Her fourth studio album, Uyanış (Awakening), came out in 2009. She also wrote several songs on this album.

In 2010, she released her first arabesque album, Arabesque. This album featured covers of famous arabesque songs. It sold over 100,000 copies, which was a great success. She released a second arabesque album, Arabesque II, in 2011, which also sold well.

Back to Pop and Classical Music (2013–Present)

In 2013, Işın Karaca returned to pop music with her album Her Şey Aşktan (Everything is because of love). She also sang "Geceyi Sana Yazdım" for a tribute album to Onur Akın. On March 18, 2013, she and 16 other singers performed "Çanakkale Türküsü" for Gallipoli Memorial Day.

On January 30, 2015, she released her first Turkish classical music album, "Ey Aşkın Güzel Kızı" (Beautiful daughter of love). The first music video from this album was "Bir Garip Yolcu (Yalan Dünya)." In 2017, she released her sixth pop album, Eyvallah.

Other Activities

Acting

Işın Karaca had a main role in the movie "Sen Ne Dilersen" (Whatever You Wish). She played a character named "Marika." Her acting in this role was highly praised.

Television Shows

In 2005, she hosted a music show called "Işın Show" on ATV. She invited many popular Turkish singers and actors to her show. She also appeared as a guest singer in the TV series Haziran Gecesi.

In 2007, she co-hosted a beauty contest called "Kadın Her Yaşta Güzeldir." She also became a music coach for a show called "Şarkı Söylemek Lazım." In this show, celebrities who weren't singers learned to sing. She and her partner did very well, finishing 4th.

In 2009, she was a guest actress in "Altın Kızlar," the Turkish version of "The Golden Girls." From 2012 to 2015, she hosted "Başucu Şarkıları" on TRT Müzik.

Writing

Since 2005, Işın Karaca has written a blog called "Kaleminden" (From her pen) on her official website. She writes about her work and her thoughts on daily events. She also shares her views on important topics like global awareness.

She also announced that she was writing a diet book called "Büyümek İçin Küçülmek Lazım" (Need to get smaller to grow). The book shares her experiences and tips about losing weight. In 2008, she started writing columns for the 2kadin.com website, focusing on relationships for women.

Fashion Design

In May 2016, Işın Karaca announced her own fashion collection. She designed clothes especially for plus-sized people.

Helping Others

Işın Karaca is also known for her charity work. In 2005, she helped rebuild the library of "Gölcük Kız Meslek High School." This school was damaged in the 1999 İzmit earthquake. She gave a concert and donated the money to the school. The library was later named after her.

In 2006, she joined the "Yaşasın Okulumuz" project. This project helps build or improve schools, especially in areas that need it most. She sang the theme song with other artists and donated one of her songs to the project's album.

In 2008, she contributed to a charity album called "Gel Sende Katıl Umudun Şarkısına" (Come, join the song of hope). This song was made for "KACUV" (Foundation of Hope for Kids with Cancer). The project aims to build clean homes for children with cancer during their treatment.

In 2009, she started a project called "Doğudan Doğan Işık" (The light that sets from east). This project helps renovate village schools in Turkey.
