About Işın Karaca
Işın Funda Büyükkaraca was born into a Turkish Cypriot family. Her family had moved to the United Kingdom. Her mother, Şeniz Büyükkaraca, owns a restaurant in Cyprus. Her father, Ali Büyükkaraca, who passed away in 2011, was a real estate agent from Afyon, Turkey. Işın studied theatre at the London IV King Edward School.
Family Life
Işın Karaca has two children. Her son, Erda Kıvanç, was born in 1993 from her first marriage to Soner Kıvanç. She later divorced. She had a long-term relationship with arranger and composer Erdem Yörük.
Işın married director Sedat Doğan on May 30, 2011. Their daughter, Sasha Mia, was born in 2011. The couple divorced in November 2013. On December 29, 2016, she married Tuğrul Odabaş. They divorced on November 6, 2019. In December 2019, she started dating musician Can Yapıcıoğlu. They married on October 27, 2023.
In July 2023, Işın Karaca shared that she was diagnosed with alopecia universalis. This is a condition that causes hair loss.
Music Journey
Işın Karaca's music career began in the late 1990s. She became a well-known singer in Turkey.
Starting as a Backing Vocalist (1997–2004)
Işın started her music journey singing backup for the famous artist Sezen Aksu. In 1997, she sang songs for the Turkish version of Disney's Hercules soundtrack. She also performed the Turkish translations for this album. In 1999, she became the main singer for a group called "Panic Attack." However, the group broke up before releasing any albums.
In 2000, she tried to represent Turkey in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song "Bir Kırık Sevda." She didn't get chosen for Eurovision, but she came in 7th place in the OGAE Second Chance Contest. The next year, she tried again with "Kaderimsin" but was not selected. She also appeared in Sezen Aksu's music videos.
Işın continued to work as a backing vocalist for Sezen Aksu until 2001. She also worked as a model for a fashion company called "Sumak" in 2004–2005. She and her brother, Akın Büyükkaraca, own a music production company called Akış Production.
First Album Success
Işın Karaca released her first album, Anadilim Aşk (My Native Language is Love), in 2001. Sezen Aksu helped her with this album. Most of the songs were written by Sezen Aksu. The album was a big success and made her very popular across Turkey. Her first two songs, Tutunamadım and Başka Bahar, became hit songs. The music video for her third song, "Aramıza Yollar," was the first high-definition video in Turkey.
After her first album, she sang on several other albums. She also appeared as a guest star in Ezel Akay's movie Where's Firuze?. In 2004, she formed a group called "Masalcılar" (Storytellers). They released an album called Masalcılar I, where they told stories for children.
In 2004, she released her second album, İçinde Aşk Var (There's Love Inside). She worked with different songwriters for this album. She also wrote one of the songs herself. The first music video from this album, Yetinmeyi Bilir misin?, became a hit. Her second video, "Bekleyelim de Görelim," was also very successful.
Collaborations and Charity Work
In 2006, Işın sang on Mehmet Tokat's poetry album. She also performed "Ben Sana Vurgunum" for Ali Kocatepe's special tribute album. She sang "Eski Bir Resim" on rap-singer Ogeday's album. She also helped with a charity album called Yaşasın Okulumuz. This project aimed to build or improve schools, especially in less developed areas.
New Albums and Styles (2006–2011)
In 2006, Işın released her third solo album, 33/3 Başka (Different). She wrote a song for this album too. The first music video from this album was for "Mandalinalar," which became a hit.

In 2007, she sang "The Final Countdown" with Dolapdere Big Gang. This was her first song officially recorded in English. In 2008, she sang a cover of Esmeray's hit "Unutama Beni." This song was used as the theme for the ATV TV series "Elif."
Işın Karaca's fourth studio album, Uyanış (Awakening), came out on May 29, 2009. She also wrote several songs on this album.
In April 2010, she released her first arabesque album, Arabesque. This album featured covers of famous arabesque songs. It sold over 100,000 copies, which was more than her pop albums. Because of its success, she released a second arabesque album, Arabesque II, in June 2011. This album also sold well.
Back to Pop and Classical Music (2013–Present)
In 2012, Işın announced her new pop album, Her Şey Aşktan (Everything is because of love). It was released on May 8, 2013.
In 2013, she sang "Geceyi Sana Yazdım" for a tribute album honoring Onur Akın. On March 18, 2013, she and 16 other singers performed "Çanakkale Türküsü." This was a special song for the 98th anniversary of Gallipoli Memorial Day. In May 2014, she sang "Vestiyer" on Ahmet Selçuk İlkan's duets album Söz.
On January 30, 2015, she released her first Turkish classical music album, "Ey Aşkın Güzel Kızı" (Beautiful daughter of love). The first music video from this album was "Bir Garip Yolcu (Yalan Dünya)." In February 2015, she appeared in Deniz Seki's music video "Hayat 2 Bilet." In May 2015, she sang "Hasret Yarası" for Musa Eroğlu's tribute album. In June 2015, she sang "Kolay mı" on Eda and Metin Özülkü's album.
In December 2017, she released her sixth pop music album, Eyvallah. The first song from this album, "Güzelim," was released earlier on June 10, 2016.

Işın Karaca has explored other fields beyond music, including acting and writing.
Acting Roles
Işın had a main role in the movie "Sen Ne Dilersen" (International English title: Whatever You Wish). She played a character named "Marika." Her acting in this role was highly praised, even though it was her first big movie part.

She was also set to act in a movie called "Herşeyin Bittiği Yerden." This movie was about the 1999 İzmit earthquake. However, the film was canceled due to money problems.
TV Appearances
In 2005, Işın hosted a music show called "Işın Show" on the ATV channel. On her show, she welcomed many popular Turkish singers and actors. The program ended in August 2005. She also appeared as a guest singer in the Turkish TV series Haziran Gecesi.
In 2007, she co-hosted a beauty contest called "Kadın Her Yaşta Güzeldir" with Vatan Şaşmaz. Also in 2007, she became a music coach for Vatan Şaşmaz on a show called "Şarkı Söylemek Lazım." In this show, famous people who weren't singers learned to sing. They did very well, finishing 4th out of 12 teams. Later in 2007, she hosted another music show called "Haydi Söyle."
In 2009, she was a guest actress in "Altın Kızlar," the Turkish version of The Golden Girls. She played Nurse Binnaz. From 2012 to 2015, she hosted "Başucu Şarkıları" on the TRT Müzik channel.
Writing and Blogging
Since March 2, 2005, Işın Karaca has written a blog called "Kaleminden" (From her pen) on her official website. She writes about her work and sometimes shares her thoughts on daily events. Her articles cover various topics, from global issues to the music industry. She has written many articles for her blog.
In 2005, she announced that she was writing a book. She later shared that it was a diet book called "Büyümek İçin Küçülmek Lazım" (Need to get smaller to grow). The book shares her experiences with losing weight and includes diet tips and recipes.
In 2008, she became a columnist for the 2kadin.com website. She has been writing columns about relationships, mainly for women, since June 18, 2008.
Fashion Design
In May 2016, Işın Karaca announced her "2016 Fall-Winter" fashion collection. She said she designed clothes especially for plus-sized people. The collection was released in September 2016.
Giving Back to the Community
Işın Karaca is also known for her charity work and helping others.
In 2005, she helped rebuild the library of "Gölcük Kız Meslek High School." This school's library was damaged in the 1999 İzmit earthquake. On July 3, 2005, she held a charity concert and gave the money earned to the school. On April 19, 2006, the library, which was named after her, officially opened.
In 2006, she supported the Yaşasın Okulumuz project. This project aims to build or improve schools, especially in areas that need it most. She sang the theme song with other artists. She also allowed one of her songs, "Sen," to be included in the album made for the project. She joined a charity night on Show TV, where she and other artists answered calls for donations.
In April 2008, she helped with a charity song called "Gel Sende Katıl Umudun Şarkısına" (Come, join the song of hope). This song was made for "KACUV" (Foundation of Hope for Kids with Cancer). The project's goal is to build clean homes for children with cancer during their treatment.
In 2009, she and Sedat Doğan started a project called "Doğudan Doğan Işık" (The light that sets from east). This project is an exhibition that aims to renovate village schools in Turkey. They started their first photoshoot in Mardin.
