Remembering the INS Dakar Submarine
The INS Dakar was a submarine of the Israeli Navy. In January 1968, it was on its way to Israel. It was traveling across the Mediterranean Sea. Sadly, the submarine disappeared without a trace.
For many years, no one knew what happened to it. Search efforts continued for decades. Finally, in 1999, parts of the submarine were found. They were deep under the sea.
The Memorial's Design and Location
The INS Dakar Memorial was built in 1970. The architect who designed it was David Anatol Brotzkos. He made the memorial look like a submarine. It is made of exposed concrete.
The lower half of the memorial is built into the ground. This makes it look like a submarine that is partly underwater. The memorial stands in the Garden of the Missing Soldiers. This garden is part of the National Military and Police Cemetery.
Special Features of the Memorial
On the front of the memorial, there is a special message. It is a verse from the Bible, Psalm 77:19. It says: "Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though Your footprints were not seen." This verse reminds us of the soldiers lost at sea.
Inside the memorial, there is a quiet room. This room holds the names of all 69 soldiers. Each name is a reminder of a life lost. The memorial stands next to a wall. This wall lists the names of other missing soldiers from Israel.
