ITV (which used to be called Independent Television) is a major TV channel in the United Kingdom. It was started in 1955 by a group called the Independent Television Authority (ITA). The main idea was to offer a different choice for viewers, as the BBC was the only TV channel at the time. ITV was created to bring some friendly rivalry to British television.

How ITV Started and Grew

ITV began as one big network of television stations across the UK. It stayed like this for many years. Then, in 2002, ITV changed and split into several different channels. These new channels included ITV, ITV2, ITV3, and ITV4. All these channels are also available in High Definition (HD), which means the picture quality is super clear!

ITV Channels Across the UK

ITV has different regional channels that show local news and programmes, as well as national shows. Here are some of the main regions and what they are called now:

  • Anglia Television (now known as 'ITV Anglia') broadcasts to the East of England.
  • Carlton Central (now known as 'ITV Central') broadcasts to the English Midlands.
  • Carlton / London Weekend Television (now known as 'ITV London') broadcasts to London.
  • Meridian Broadcasting (now known as 'ITV Meridian') broadcasts to South West England.
  • Tyne Tees Television (now known as 'ITV Tyne Tees') broadcasts to North East England.
  • Granada Television (now known as 'ITV Granada') broadcasts to North West England.
