ITV (which used to be called Independent Television) is a major TV channel in the United Kingdom. It was started in 1955 by a group called the Independent Television Authority (ITA). The main idea was to offer a different choice for viewers, as the BBC was the only TV channel at the time. ITV was created to bring some friendly rivalry to British television.

ITV began as one big network of television stations across the UK. It stayed like this for many years. Then, in 2002, ITV changed and split into several different channels.
