The I Marine Expeditionary Force (often called I MEF) is a very important part of the United States Marine Corps. It is a special kind of military group known as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). This means it has its own ground troops, aircraft, and support teams all working together.
I MEF is made up of three main parts. These are the 1st Marine Division, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and the 1st Marine Logistics Group. This powerful force is based in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.
I Marine Expeditionary Force is the largest of the three MEFs in the Marine Corps. It is often called the "Warfighting MEF" because it is always ready for major missions around the world. Currently, Lieutenant General Joseph Osterman leads the Force.

These were very challenging urban battles.
