Iain "Huey" Hewitson was born on October 4, 1948, in Ōtaki, New Zealand. He is a famous chef, restaurant owner, author, and TV star. He moved to Australia in 1972. Many people know him from his cooking shows on Network Ten. He was also the face of the supermarket chain BI-LO.
Huey's TV Cooking Career
Iain Hewitson got his start in television thanks to a producer named Gavan Disney. From 1992 to 1998, Huey was part of the TV show Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. On this show, he taught viewers how to cook.
He was also a regular chef on the morning talk show GMA with Bert Newton until December 2005. After that, he hosted his own cooking programs. These included Huey's TV Dinner (2001) and Never Trust a Skinny Cook.
Huey also hosted Huey's Cooking Adventures from 1997 to 2010. Later, he hosted Huey's Kitchen from 2010 to 2014. He stopped doing TV shows in 2019. He said he was very tired from all the travel and filming. He felt he needed a break from the busy TV schedule.
Huey has shared his thoughts on other cooking shows and chefs. He once said he didn't like the style of chef Gordon Ramsay, calling him a "bully." He also commented on the cooking competition show Masterchef. He thought it was well-made but believed it was more of a game show than a true cooking show.
Huey's Music Life
Before becoming a famous chef, Iain Hewitson was also a musician. In the 1960s, he was a folk singer. He was also a member of two bands: "Cellophane" and "Sebastian's Floral Array." Both of these bands won awards in New Zealand's "Battle of the Bands" competitions.
In 1968, he joined a band called 691. By the end of that year, the band changed its name to Cellophane. The band members were Huey on vocals, Dave Wellington on guitar, Michael Hill on bass, Pam Potter on keyboards, and John Van der Ryden on drums.
In 1969, Cellophane recorded four songs for Pye Records. These songs included a cover of "Fire" by Arthur Brown. They also recorded "Mind Patterns," which Huey wrote, and "I Can’t Quit Her." The band broke up in 1970. The song "Fire" was released with "Mind Patterns" on the other side. Both "Hey Joe" by Sebastian's Floral Array and "Fire" by Cellophane can be found on a music collection called A Day in My Mind's Mind Volume 4.
Huey loves his Rickenbacker guitar and Vox amplifier. His wife bought them for him as a surprise Christmas gift. In 2009, at the end of one of his TV shows, he played his guitar. He sang the Beatles song "Octopus's Garden" with his seven-year-old daughter, Charlotte.
