Ian Forbes Begg (born February 12, 1911 – died March 18, 1989) was an important leader in the Scottish Episcopal Church. He was a bishop, which is a high-ranking church official. From 1973 to 1976, he served as the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney.

Early Life and Education

Ian Forbes Begg was born on February 12, 1911. His parents were Reverend John Smith Begg and Elizabeth Macintyre. He went to the University of Aberdeen and earned a Master of Arts degree in 1931.

A Career in the Church

Ian Begg began his journey in the church in 1933. He became a deacon, which is the first step in becoming a priest. In 1935, he was ordained as a priest. His first job was helping out at St Paul's Church in Liverpool from 1933 to 1934.

After that, he moved to Scotland. He worked at St Ninian's Church in Aberdeen for many years, from 1935 to 1973. He also held important roles at St Andrew's Cathedral, Aberdeen. From 1965 to 1969, he was a Canon, which is a special priest linked to a cathedral. Then, from 1969 to 1972, he became the Dean of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney. A Dean is a senior priest who helps lead a group of churches.

In 1949, Ian Begg married Lillie Taylor Paterson. In 1971, the University of Aberdeen gave him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. This is a special award for his contributions.

Becoming a Bishop

Later Years and Retirement

Ian Begg retired from his role as Bishop in 1977. Even after retiring, he continued to serve the church. He worked as a priest at St Machar's Church in Bucksburn, which is near Aberdeen. He passed away on March 18, 1989, at the age of 78.
