Frederick Charles Darwent (born April 20, 1927 – died January 15, 2020) was an important religious leader. He served as the bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney from 1976 to 1991.
Life and Career of Frederick Darwent
Frederick Darwent was born in Liverpool, England. He went to Ormskirk Grammar School for his education.
Military Service and Early Church Roles
After school, Darwent served in the military. He was part of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and spent time in the Far East.
Later, he decided to join the church. He became a Deacon in 1961 and a Priest in 1963. His first church job was as a Curate in Wigan.
Becoming a Bishop
Frederick Darwent then held several important positions in the church. He was a rector in places like Strichen, New Pitsligo, and Fraserburgh.
In 1971, he became a Canon at St Andrew's Cathedral, Aberdeen. From 1973 to 1978, he was the Dean of Aberdeen and Orkney.
In 1976, he was chosen to be the bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney. He held this role until 1991. He also worked as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in Aberdeen from 1989 to 1996.
Frederick Darwent passed away in January 2020 when he was 92 years old.
