Ian Kyle Conyers (born October 28, 1988) is an American politician and businessman. He represented the 4th District of Michigan in the Michigan Senate for one term.

While in the State Senate, Conyers was part of several important groups. These included committees for Economic Development & International Investment, Energy & Technology, and Banking & Financial Services. He also served as the minority vice chair for the Transportation Committee.

Early Life and Education

Ian Conyers was born in 1988 and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. His family has lived in Detroit for a long time. His great-grandfather, John Conyers Sr., moved there from Georgia. This move was part of the Great Migration, when many African Americans moved from the Southern U.S. to Northern cities.

Ian's grandfather, William Conyers, was the younger brother of Congressman John Conyers Jr.. John Conyers Jr. was a very well-known politician. He served in Congress for a record-setting amount of time before he retired in 2017.

School and College

Ian Conyers attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School. After high school, he went to Georgetown University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in government. While at Georgetown, Ian played football. He also joined the Kappa Chi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Conyers continued his studies at Georgetown. He earned a master's degree in urban and regional planning. This field focuses on how cities are planned and developed. While living in Washington, D.C., he worked on a big project. This project was about redeveloping the Anacostia waterfront. It was a long-term effort involving both public and private groups.

Political Career

Becoming a State Senator

In 2016, Ian Conyers decided to run for political office. On January 27, 2016, he first filed to run for the Michigan's 3rd State House District.

Later, on April 13, 2016, he decided to run for a different position. He filed to run for the Michigan's 4th State Senate District. This seat was open because the previous senator had resigned.

In the primary election, Conyers competed against nine other candidates. He won with 34.52% of the votes. In the main election, he won against Republican Keith Franklin. Conyers received 76.55% of the votes. He officially took office in November 2016. At 28 years old, he was the youngest state senator in Michigan's history at that time.

During his time in the State Senate, Conyers served on several committees. These included the Economic Development & International Investment, Energy & Technology, and Banking & Financial Services committees. He was also the minority vice chair of the Transportation Committee. His term as state senator ended on December 31, 2018.

Running for Congress

In late 2017, Ian's great-uncle, Congressman John Conyers Jr., faced some serious concerns. These concerns were about his behavior with former staff members. The House Ethics Committee started an investigation into these matters. John Conyers Jr. resigned from his position on December 5, 2017. He suggested his son, John Conyers III, as a possible person to take his place.

On the same day, Ian Conyers announced he would run for the open Congressional seat. He said that his great-uncle had privately encouraged him to run. On January 19, 2018, Ian Conyers officially announced his candidacy for the 13th Congressional District.

The election for this seat was held later. It was a special election to fill the rest of John Conyers Jr.'s term. There was also a regular election for the next full term. Brenda Jones, who was the Detroit city council president, won the election for the partial term. Rashida Tlaib won the election for the full term by a small number of votes.
