Ian Patrick McLagan was a talented English musician. He was born on May 12, 1945, and passed away on December 3, 2014. Ian was best known for playing keyboards in two famous rock bands: Small Faces and Faces.
He also worked with other well-known groups, like the Rolling Stones. Ian McLagan even led his own band starting in the late 1970s. His amazing musical career led to him being honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Growing Up: Ian McLagan's Start in Music
Ian McLagan was born in Isleworth, England. His father, Alec, was a champion speed skater. His mother, Susan, was from Ireland. Ian had an older brother named Mike. The McLagan family lived in Hounslow, West London.
Ian started playing keyboards at age seven. His mother bought him an upright piano. One of his first times performing was in a group called 'the Blue Men'. In that band, he played rhythm guitar.
Ian went to school in Isleworth and Twickenham. He studied art for a while. However, he soon left art school. He wanted to focus completely on his music.
Joining Small Faces and Faces
Ian McLagan began playing in bands in the early 1960s. He first used a special keyboard called a Hohner Cembalet. Later, he switched to the Hammond organ and Wurlitzer electric piano. He also sometimes played guitar.
In 1965, he joined the band Small Faces. He was hired by their manager, Don Arden. Ian replaced another member named Jimmy Winston. His first show with Small Faces was in London on November 2, 1965.
Ian's pay was £30 a week at first. He later asked for £20 a week, the same as the other band members. They didn't earn much more than that for a while. They only started getting royalties in 1967. Ian wrote or co-wrote several songs for Small Faces. These included "Up the Wooden Hills to Bedfordshire" and "Long Agos and Worlds Apart".
In 1969, the singer Steve Marriott left Small Faces. Two new members, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, joined the group. The band then changed its name to Faces.
Collaborating with Other Musicians
After the Faces band broke up in 1975, Ian McLagan became a sideman. This means he played music for other artists. He worked with the Rolling Stones in the studio. He also toured with them. He played electric piano on their song "Miss You".
Ian also worked on different projects with Ronnie Wood. He played with a band called the New Barbarians. Ian was a very busy session musician. He played for many famous artists. These included Chuck Berry, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, and Bob Dylan. He also played with Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, and Bruce Springsteen.
In 2009, Ian McLagan toured Europe with the James McMurtry band. In 2010, he joined The Black Crowes on stage in Austin, Texas. He played keyboards and sang during their encore. They even played two Faces songs.
In 2014, Ian McLagan helped start a new band called the Empty Hearts. His bandmates included Blondie drummer Clem Burke and the Cars' guitarist Elliot Easton. The band released their first album in August 2014.
Ian also played on Lucinda Williams' album Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone in 2014. He also contributed to the Ruen Brothers' album All My Shades Of Blue. He recorded his parts for this album shortly before he passed away.
Ian McLagan's Bump Band
Ian McLagan also released several albums as a solo artist. He was a highly requested musician. He led his own band, called the Bump Band, starting in 1977.
Later in his life, Ian moved to Austin, Texas. He often played live shows at local clubs and bars there. Ian McLagan & the Bump Band performed at the 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival. They also opened for the Rolling Stones in Austin, Texas, in 2006.
Ian McLagan's Personal Life
Ian McLagan was married to Sandy Sarjeant from 1968 to 1972. She was a dancer on a TV show. They had a son named Lee.
Later, Ian started a relationship with Kim Kerrigan. She was the former wife of Keith Moon, the drummer for the Who. Kim and her daughter Amanda moved in with Ian. Ian and Kim got married in 1978. This was one month after Keith Moon passed away. Sadly, Kim died in a car accident in Austin, Texas, in 2006. She was 57 years old.
Ian McLagan wrote a book about his life. It was called All the Rage: A Riotous Romp Through Rock & Roll History. He first published it in 2000. He updated and reprinted it in 2013.
Ian McLagan's Passing
Ian McLagan passed away on December 3, 2014. He was 69 years old. He died from a stroke in Austin, Texas.
