About Ian Saville
Early Life and Becoming a Magician
Ian Saville was born in the East End of London, England. He started learning magic tricks when he was just 11 years old. He even made it to the semi-finals of a national talent show! Later, he became very interested in theatre. He studied drama at the University of Exeter. He also traveled with a political theatre group called Broadside. He worked in community theatre too, which often involves performing for local groups.
His Unique Magic Style
In 1979, Ian Saville began to create his special "socialist magic" act. He was greatly inspired by a famous writer named Bertolt Brecht. One of Ian's shows even features a puppet of Brecht! He has also worked with a folk singer named Leon Rosselson on two shows. Some of his well-known tricks include "The Class Struggle Rope Trick." Another trick is called "The vanish of the military-industrial complex." These tricks use magic to talk about big ideas in society.
In 1990, Ian Saville earned a special degree called a PhD. He got it from City University, London. His studies were about political theatre in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, he teaches theatre courses part-time at Middlesex University. In August 2013, he performed a free show about money at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This is a very famous arts festival.
