The Aran rock lizard (Iberolacerta aranica) is a special type of lizard. It belongs to the Lacertidae family. These lizards are known for living in rocky areas.

Where Does the Aran Rock Lizard Live?

The Aran rock lizard lives in a small area of the central Pyrenees mountains. This area is right on the border between Spain and France. You can find it in the Mauberme massif. This includes the foothills between the Val d'Aran in Spain and the Ariège in France.

What is Its Home Like?

The natural habitat of the Aran rock lizard is usually cool, grassy areas. They also love rocky places and open pastures. These are the perfect spots for them to find food and bask in the sun.

Why is This Lizard Important?

The Aran rock lizard is currently considered an endangered species. This means it is at risk of disappearing forever. The biggest threat to these lizards is habitat loss. Their homes are shrinking or changing, making it harder for them to survive. Protecting their natural areas is very important.

What Does the Aran Rock Lizard Look Like?

The Aran rock lizard is a medium-sized lizard.

  • Size: Males can grow up to 62 millimeters (about 2.4 inches) long. This measurement includes their tail. Females can be a bit longer, reaching up to 67 millimeters (about 2.6 inches).
  • Color: Their backs are usually grayish. Sometimes, this color can look a bit brown or olive green.
  • Special Male Colors: Some male lizards have a shiny, metallic green color on their backs.
  • Back Patterns: You might see a thin dark line running down the middle of their back. A line of dark spots often runs along both sides of their back. These spots can even go onto their tail.
  • Side Patterns: On each side of their body, near the front, they have two light-colored bands. These bands have irregular edges.
  • Flank Bands: A wide, dark brown or black band runs along each side of their body. This band goes from their temple (near their eye) all the way to the start of their tail.
  • Underside: Their belly is usually white. However, it can sometimes look a little bluish or greenish depending on the light.
