Ibiza (also called Eivissa in Catalan) is a city and a municipality in Spain. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of Ibiza. This island is part of the Balearic Islands, a group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea.

Discovering Ibiza City

The city of Ibiza is often called Eivissa in the local Catalan language. Sometimes people also call it Vila d'Eivissa or just Vila, which means "Town". The city has two main parts.

Old Town: Dalt Vila

The older part of the city is known as the Catalan Dalt Vila. This means "Upper Town". It is built on a small mountain right by the sea. This historic area has narrow streets and old buildings.

Modern Area: Eixample

The newer part of Ibiza City is called the Eixample. This word means "Extension". It is the more modern area with wider streets and newer buildings.

Population and Importance

Ibiza City is the biggest and most important town on the island of Ibiza. In 2021, about 50,643 people lived there. It is also the capital of the Pityusic Islands. This group includes Ibiza and the nearby island of Formentera.

There are many interesting places to see in Ibiza City.

  • Cathedral of Santa Maria d'Eivissa: This old church was built in the 14th century. It sits at the very top of the Dalt Vila, offering great views.
  • Necropolis of Puig des Molins: This is an ancient burial ground from the Punic times. A necropolis is like a large cemetery from long ago.
  • Christ, the Sacred Heart of Jesus: This is a tall statue, about 23 meters (75 feet) high. It was inspired by the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. You can find it about 3.1 miles (5 km) north of the city.

Understanding Ibiza's Climate

Ibiza has a warm and sunny climate. It is known as a hot semi-arid climate or a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has mild winters and hot, dry summers.

  • The coldest month is January, with an average high of 15.7°C (60°F) and a low of 8.1°C (47°F).
