Abu'l-Qasim Ahmad ibn Mu'awiya ibn Muhammad ibn Hisham ibn Mu'awiya ibn Hisham ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'awiya, also known as Ibn al-Qitt, was an important person in the history of the Emirate of Córdoba. He lived in what is now Spain during the 9th and 10th centuries. He was a member of the powerful Umayyad dynasty royal family. Ibn al-Qitt became known as a rebel and claimed to be the Mahdi, a special leader in Islamic belief. He died in the year 901.

Who Was Ibn al-Qitt?

Ibn al-Qitt was a great-great-grandson of Hisham I of Córdoba. Hisham I was an important ruler of the Emirate of Córdoba. This means Ibn al-Qitt came from a very old and respected family. The Umayyad family ruled a large area of what is now Spain for many centuries.

The Idea of the Mahdi

In some Islamic beliefs, the Mahdi is a special leader. This leader is believed to appear before the end of the world. The Mahdi is expected to bring justice and fairness to the world. Ibn al-Qitt believed he was this special leader.

Starting a Rebellion

Ibn al-Qitt was convinced by a religious person named Abu Ali al-Sarrai. Some people think Abu Ali al-Sarrai might have been a secret agent. He may have been trying to cause trouble for the rulers. Abu Ali al-Sarrai told Ibn al-Qitt that he was the Mahdi. This idea made Ibn al-Qitt decide to start a rebellion.

Fighting the Emir

Ibn al-Qitt rebelled against the ruler of the Emirate of Córdoba. This ruler was named Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Umawi. Ibn al-Qitt wanted to challenge the Emir's power. He also declared a Jihad against Christians. A Jihad can mean a struggle or effort, sometimes a holy war.

Supporters of the Rebellion

Many people joined Ibn al-Qitt's rebellion. These included different Berber tribes. Berbers are a group of people from North Africa. They lived in areas like Llano de los Pedroches and the Guadiana basin. People from cities like Trujillo, Toledo, and Talavera also followed him.

The Attack on Zamora

Ibn al-Qitt's first big military action was in the year 901 AD. He led an attack against the city of Zamora. However, during this attack, some of the Berber leaders who supported him changed sides. They stopped following Ibn al-Qitt. Because of this, Ibn al-Qitt was captured. He was then reportedly beheaded. This ended his rebellion.
