About Ibrahim Sarsur

Early Life and Education

Ibrahim Sarsur was born in Kafr Qasim, a town in Israel, on February 2, 1959. In the 1970s, he went to Bar-Ilan University. There, he studied English literature and English linguistics.

Starting in Politics

Sarsur began his political journey in 1989. He became a member of the local council in Kafr Qasim. A local council helps manage a town's daily needs. He served on this council for many years.

In 1999, he became a leader in the southern part of the Islamic Movement in Israel. This group works on social and religious issues. He also helped lead the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel. This committee works to support Arab citizens in Israel.

Time in the Knesset

Ibrahim Sarsur was first elected to the Knesset in 2006. The Knesset is where laws are made in Israel. He was a representative for the United Arab List party.

He was re-elected to the Knesset in 2009. In a speech in 2011, he talked about his hopes for a new caliphate. A caliphate is a type of Islamic state, and he suggested it could have its capital in Jerusalem.

He was elected again in 2013. Later that year, he signed a petition. This petition asked for the release of Jonathan Pollard. Pollard was an American who was in prison for spying for Israel. Sarsur said he felt a connection to Pollard's situation. He compared it to how some Palestinian prisoners are treated.

Retirement from Politics

Before the 2015 elections, Sarsur decided to retire from politics. He was given a special symbolic spot on the Joint List. This was a group of Arab parties and another party called Hadash. His place on the list was 119th.

After he retired, Masud Ghnaim became the new leader of his party.
