Ibrahim ibn al-Walid (died 25 January 750) was a ruler, known as a Caliph, of the Umayyad Caliphate. He was the son of Caliph al-Walid I. Ibrahim ruled for only two months in the year 744. He was one of the last leaders of the Umayyad Empire.
Becoming Caliph
Ibrahim ibn al-Walid was born in Damascus. His father was al-Walid I, a powerful ruler of the Umayyad Empire. Ibrahim's mother was named Su'ar or Budayra.
Ibrahim's brother, Yazid III, was the Caliph before him. Yazid III chose Ibrahim to be the next ruler. Sadly, Yazid III became very sick with a brain tumor. He passed away on October 3 or 4, 744. After his brother's death, Ibrahim officially became the new Caliph.
Ibrahim's Short Reign
Ibrahim's time as Caliph was very short. He ruled for only two months in 744. During this time, he faced many challenges. Some people did not fully accept him as the new leader.
One important historian, Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, even questioned if Ibrahim truly became Caliph. However, al-Tabari also wrote that Ibrahim, as Caliph, did make an important decision. He confirmed Abdallah ibn Umar as the governor of Iraq.
Giving Up Power
Ibrahim was chosen as the next ruler by his brother, Yazid III. However, another powerful leader named Marwan II wanted to become Caliph. Marwan II had opposed Yazid III before. Even though Marwan II later agreed to support Yazid, he continued to seek power after Yazid's early death.
Ibrahim decided to give up his position as Caliph. He was worried about his political opponents. He asked Marwan II for a promise of safety, which Marwan agreed to. Ibrahim then traveled with Marwan to a place called Rusafah in Syria.
Later Life and Death
Like many members of the Umayyad ruling family, Ibrahim faced a difficult end. The Abbasid family took over the empire in 750. They removed the Umayyad family from power. Ibrahim lost his life during this change of power in 750.
