The icterine greenbul (Phyllastrephus icterinus) is a small, yellowish songbird. It belongs to the bulbul family, called Pycnonotidae. You can find this bird living in the forests of western and central Africa.
What is an Icterine Greenbul?
The name "icterine" means "yellowish." This is a great way to describe this bird because of its yellow feathers! Scientists first gave it a different name, but later changed it to Phyllastrephus icterinus. Sometimes, people also call it the lesser icterine bulbul.
The Mystery of the Liberian Greenbul
For a while, scientists thought there was a very rare bird called the Liberian greenbul. It was seen only a few times in Liberia between 1981 and 1984. One bird was even collected in 1984. This bird had unusual white patches on its wings.
However, in 2017, scientists did a DNA test on the collected bird. They discovered something amazing! The Liberian greenbul was not a separate species at all. It was actually just a regular icterine greenbul with unusual feather colors. This strange coloring might have been caused by not getting enough nutrients from its food. So, the mystery was solved! The Liberian greenbul is just a special-looking icterine greenbul.
Where Does the Icterine Greenbul Live?
The icterine greenbul lives in many parts of Africa. You can find it from Guinea all the way to Ghana. It also lives in southern Nigeria, western and southern Uganda, and parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You might even spot it in the very northwestern tip of Angola.
This bird likes to live in different kinds of places. It prefers warm, dry forests and moist lowland forests. It can also be found in moist savanna areas, which are like grasslands with scattered trees.
