Where the River Flows

What's in a Name?

The name Iditarod comes from the local Deg Hit’an people. They are an Athabascan group. Their name for the river was Haiditirod or Haidilatna. The English name Iditarod is a simpler way to say it. It might have come from the name of a village that was on the river. There was a village called Iditarod in the early 1900s.
