The Iditarod River is a river in Alaska, United States. It flows for about 325 miles (523 km). This river is a branch, or tributary, of the larger Innoko River.
Where the River Flows
The Iditarod River starts in the northern part of the Russian Mountains. This area is near a place called Chuathbaluk. From there, the river flows mostly northeast. Then it turns west. It eventually joins the Innoko River. This meeting point is close to a village named Holikachuk.
What's in a Name?
The name Iditarod comes from the local Deg Hit’an people. They are an Athabascan group. Their name for the river was Haiditirod or Haidilatna. The English name Iditarod is a simpler way to say it. It might have come from the name of a village that was on the river. There was a village called Iditarod in the early 1900s.
