Idriz Ajeti (born June 26, 1917 – died February 13, 2019) was an important expert on the Albanian language. He was from Kosovo. After World War II, he became one of the top researchers of the Albanian language. He spent many years working at the University of Pristina. He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. He even led this Academy for seven years.

Life of Idriz Ajeti

Idriz Ajeti was born on June 26, 1917. His birthplace was the village of Tupale in Serbia. This area is now part of the Medveđa municipality.

His Education

He went to elementary school in the nearby village of Sijarinska Banja. He finished there by 1930. In 1938, he completed high school at the Royal Madrasa in Skopje.

After high school, Ajeti started studying at the University of Zagreb. He studied languages, focusing on Romance languages. He finished his university studies after World War II. In 1949, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade.

His Career and Teaching

From 1949 to 1953, he taught the Albanian language at a high school in Pristina. From 1953 to 1960, he worked as a teacher at the University of Belgrade. There, he focused on Albanology, which is the study of Albanian language and culture.

In 1958, he presented his main research paper, called a dissertation thesis. It was about the history of the Gheg dialect of Albanian spoken by Albanians in Zadar, Croatia.

In 1960, he became a docent, which is a university lecturer. By 1968, he became a full Professor. He taught Albanian Language and Literature at the University of Pristina. He also helped start a scientific magazine called Gjurmime Albanologjike (Albanological Reconnaissance). He also helped create a special program for foreign experts who wanted to study Albanian culture.

Leadership Roles

Idriz Ajeti held many important leadership roles.

  • From 1969 to 1971, he was the Director of the Albanological Institute of Pristina.
  • From 1971 to 1973, he was the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in Pristina. A dean is like a head of a university department.
  • From 1973 to 1975, he served as the rector of the University of Pristina. A rector is the main leader of a university.
  • He was also the Chairman of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. He held this position from 1979 to 1981, and again from 1996 to 1999.

Contributions to Albanian Language

In 1972, he took part in the Albanian Orthography Congress in Tirana. This was a very important meeting. During this congress, the standard rules for how to write the Albanian language were decided. Idriz Ajeti was one of the people who signed these rules.

He received several awards for his work. These included the "7 July" award from Serbia and the AVNOJ award.

Idriz Ajeti's Work and Research

Idriz Ajeti's main work was studying the Albanian language dialects. He looked at how they changed over time. He also studied old documents written in the Ottoman Alphabet. He researched the connections between the Albanian and Serbian languages.

He also worked on the Albanian language as it is spoken today. He helped start and contribute to many language discussions and meetings. He also helped write textbooks for high school and college students. These books were about Albanian language and literature.
