Idylwood's Story: A Look Back
Idylwood was first built in the 1930s. At that time, much of Houston's new development happened west of Downtown Houston. This meant that older neighborhoods like Idylwood didn't get as much attention for new projects.
However, Idylwood homes became more popular over time. From 1998 to 2003, the value of houses in Idylwood grew by 10% each year! In 2010, the Houston Press newspaper even called Idylwood one of the "Five Most Underrated Neighborhoods In Houston." This shows how special and valued the area has become.
What Idylwood Looks Like
Idylwood is located inside the 610 Loop, which is a major highway around Houston. It's southeast of Downtown Houston. The neighborhood has natural borders like the Brays Bayou, a waterway, and the Wortham Golf Course. It's also next to the Villa de Matel, which is a beautiful Roman Catholic convent and basilica. Across the Brays Bayou is Forest Park Lawndale, a large cemetery.
One unique thing about Idylwood is that it has some of the few rolling hills you'll find in Houston. Most of the city is very flat! In 2009, the Houston Press noted that the classic-style houses in Idylwood were still "affordable" for many buyers.
Flooding and Homes
Flooding is not a big problem for most Idylwood residents. However, in 2001, Tropical Storm Allison did affect some houses close to North MacGregor Way. The homes in Idylwood are mostly charming cottage bungalows.
