Iggesund is a small town, also called a locality, in Sweden. It is located in Hudiksvall Municipality within Gävleborg County. In 2010, about 3,362 people lived there.
Where is Iggesund?
Iggesund is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Hudiksvall. It is also about 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of Söderhamn. To the east of Iggesund, you'll find the Bothnian Sea. The closest big cities are Sundsvall to the north and Gävle to the south.
A Look at Iggesund's History
Iggesund was first mentioned a long time ago, in the 1400s. Back then, it was just a few farms near a small river called Iggån.
- 1546: The Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, started an eel fishing business at the Iggån river.
- 1672: The first big industry came to Iggesund. This was the Östanå paper mills, built by the Viksjön lake.
- 1685: The Iggesunds Bruk iron mill was finished. This marked the start of Iggesund's industrial age. The town slowly changed from being mostly farms to an industrial area. As the iron mill grew, the town's name became well-known because of the mill.
- 1721: Russian soldiers attacked and burned down a large part of the town and its industries.
