The Iglesia de Jesús de Nazareno is a beautiful Roman Catholic church. It is located in Cudillero, a town in Asturias, Spain. The church is built in a style called neo-Romanesque. This means its design looks like old Romanesque churches from long ago.
A kind historian and art lover named Selgas Fortunato helped pay for this church to be built. This happened in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The church officially opened in 1914. A very important guest, Princess Isabel de Borbón, was there for the opening. This new church was built where a much older church from the late 800s used to stand. It also had lovely new stained glass windows when it opened.

The Church's Crypt
What is a Crypt?
A crypt is a special room, often underground, used for burials. It is usually found beneath a church or cathedral.
Fortunato's Family Burial Place
Selgas Fortunato chose the crypt of the Iglesia de Jesús de Nazareno as his family's burial place. He wanted to make this space special. He placed a very old altar there. This altar was from the 8th century. It was built by King Silo of Asturias for an even older church. That church was called Santianes de Pravia.
Fortunato bought this ancient altar in 1905. He found it in a tavern in Selgas Pravia and paid 25 pesetas for it. That was the money used in Spain at the time.
Other Ancient Pieces
Two old Romanesque "cancels" were also kept in the crypt. Cancels are like decorative screens or barriers. These also came from the old Santianes de Pravia church.
In early 2008, the old altar and the cancels were moved. They are now kept in a room in the nearby palace.
