Iglesia de San Andrés (El Entrego) facts for kids
The Iglesia de San Andrés (which means Church of St Andrew) is a beautiful parish church located in El Entrego, a town in Asturias, Spain. It's part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oviedo. This church is built in a special style called Romanesque Revival. This means it looks like old Romanesque churches, but it was actually built more recently.
History of the Church
The very first Church of San Andrés was built a long time ago, right next to the Nalón River. But in the early 1800s, it was completely destroyed by floods.
After that, a new church was built across the river. People thought this spot would be safe from floods. However, this second church was destroyed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.
Work on the church you see today started in 1945. It was built in the El Entrego valley. The architects who designed this church were Francisco de Zuvillaga and Abelardo Suárez Moro.
Architecture and Design
The outside of the church mixes two old styles: Romanesque and Baroque. It has two tall towers and a welcoming porch at the front. The design of the church was inspired by famous old buildings like the Santa María del Naranco Cathedral and the sculptures in the Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber) of the Oviedo Cathedral.
The church's floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, which is common for churches. Inside, the main part of the church, called the nave, has a rounded ceiling that looks like a barrel. There are also two side aisles. In the middle, where the main part crosses the arms of the cross (the transept), there's a large dome with Romanesque arches. At the very end of the church, there's a rounded section called a semicircular apse.
Inside the church, you can find important statues. These include a figure of Christ lying down and a statue of Saint Andrew, after whom the church is named.
