Location Asturias,  Spain

The Iglesia de Santa María (Valdediós) is an old church located in Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain. It is part of the larger Monasterio de Santa María de Valdediós complex. This church is special because it still has three Romanesque altars, which are very rare in the Asturias region.

A Look at the Church's Style

This church was built in the 13th century. It shows a style called late-Romanesque, which was popular for churches built by the Cistercian monks.

The church has three main sections called "naves." These naves end in rounded parts called "apses." The ceilings are supported by "ribbed vaults," which are arched structures with stone ribs.

What Makes It Special

The Iglesia de Santa María is the only part of the original monastery that is still standing today. Over time, other buildings in the monastery were damaged. This happened because of many floods in the area.
