Ignacio López de Ayala was a talented Spanish writer, astronomer, and historian. He was born on October 18, 1739, in Grazalema, Cádiz, Spain. He passed away on April 24, 1789, in Tarifa.
Life and Work
Ignacio López de Ayala was a professor of poetry at the Reales Estudios de San Isidro in Madrid. He wrote a neoclassical tragedy called Numancia destruida in 1775. Many of his writings were heroic romances, which are stories about brave heroes and their adventures.
He was also a respected historian. He wrote important history books, including:
- Historia de Federico el Grande, rey de Prusia (1782), about Frederick the Great, the king of Prussia.
- Historia de Gibraltar (1782), which told the history of Gibraltar.
- El sacrosanto y ecuménico concilio de Trento (1787), about the Council of Trent, an important meeting in history.
Because of his excellent history books, he became a member of the Real Academia de la Historia. This is a very important group in Spain that studies and promotes history.
Later in his life, Ignacio López de Ayala also studied astronomy. He wrote Disertaciones astronómicas, which were detailed discussions about space and stars. He also wrote Filosofía moral de Aristóteles, which explored the moral ideas of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. He was also a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, an important academy for fine arts.
Ignacio López de Ayala died in Tarifa on April 24, 1789.
