Colonel General Igor Valentinovich Korobov (Russian: И́горь Валенти́нович Ко́робов; born August 3, 1956 – died November 21, 2018) was a high-ranking military officer. He served as the head of Russia's military intelligence agency, known as the Main Directorate. This agency is a very important part of the Russian armed forces.

Early Life and Education
Igor Korobov was born in Vyazma, a town located in Russia. This happened on August 3, 1956.
He studied hard and graduated with high honors in 1977. He finished his studies at the Stavropol Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots and Navigators. After graduating, he became an officer in the Soviet Air Forces.
His Career in Intelligence
Korobov worked as the head of the Strategic Intelligence Directorate. This role involved gathering important information for the country.
In January 2016, Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, chose him for a very important job. Korobov became the new head of the military intelligence directorate (GU). He took over after the previous head, Igor Sergun, passed away suddenly.
Important Events and Awards
On December 29, 2016, Korobov was one of the people who faced restrictions from the United States Department of the Treasury. These restrictions were put in place because of online activities that were seen as a threat to the security of the United States.
In May 2017, Korobov received a very high honor. He was given the Hero of the Russian Federation award. This award is given for showing great courage and bravery while performing military duties.
Despite the earlier restrictions, Korobov officially visited the U.S. in January 2018. He traveled with other top security officials from Russia.
His Final Years
Igor Korobov passed away on November 21, 2018. Official news sources, citing the Russian defense ministry, stated that he died "after a long and serious illness." His death happened a few months after some events that were linked to the GRU.
