Ikililou Dhoinine: A Leader of Comoros
Ikililou Dhoinine was born on August 14, 1962, in Djoièzi, a town on the island of Mohéli in the Comoros. He first trained as a pharmacist, which means he learned about medicines and how to prepare them. He is the first president of the Comoros to come from the island of Mohéli. His wife's name is Hadidja Abubacarr I'Dhoinine.
Journey into Politics
Dhoinine began his political journey by working in the Ministry of Finance. This is the part of the government that manages the country's money. He served as the Vice-President in charge of Budget and Women's Entrepreneurship. This role meant he helped decide how the government's money would be spent and supported businesses started by women.
From March 26 to March 31, 2008, he also briefly served as the provisional, or temporary, President of Anjouan. Anjouan is another important island in the Comoros. He was also the Minister of Finance for a short time, from June 2009 to June 2010.
Becoming President
Ikililou Dhoinine became the President of the Comoros after winning the 2010 presidential election. In the first round of voting, he received the most votes. He then went on to a second round against two other candidates, Mohamed Said Fazul and Abdou Djabir. Dhoinine won the election with 61.12% of the votes.
He was a member of the ruling political party at the time. The outgoing president, Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi, supported Dhoinine in his election campaign.
Key Actions as President
When he became president, Ikililou Dhoinine promised to fight against corruption. Corruption is when people in power use their position dishonestly for personal gain. To help with this, he started two important groups:
- The National Commission for the Prevention and Fight Against Corruption
- The Regulatory Authority for Public Procurement
These groups were created to make sure that government actions were open and honest. They aimed to increase transparency, which means making sure everyone can see how decisions are made and money is spent.
During his time as president, there were some challenges. In 2013, there was some discontent because several government officials were dismissed from their jobs.
