Iliana Malinova Iotova (Bulgarian: Илияна Малинова Йотова; born on October 24, 1964) is a well-known Bulgarian politician. She has been serving as the Vice President of Bulgaria since 2017. As Vice President, she works alongside the President to help lead the country. She was chosen as the running mate for Rumen Radev in the 2016 presidential election. Before this, she was a Member of the European Parliament from 2007 until 2017. Iliana Iotova speaks Bulgarian, French, and English.

Her Early Life and Education
Iliana Iotova was born in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. She went to a French high school in Sofia. Later, she earned a master's degree in Bulgarian and French philology from the University of Sofia. Philology is the study of language and literature. She also studied at special schools in France. These schools included the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Strasbourg and the Center for European Studies (CEES).
Her Career Before Politics
Before becoming a politician, Iliana Iotova worked in television. From 1990 to 1997, she was a reporter, editor, director, and presenter. She worked on news and current affairs shows for Bulgarian National Television. After her TV career, she became the director of the press service for the Bulgarian Socialist Party. This role involved managing how the party communicated with the public.
Her Political Journey
Starting in National Politics
In 2005, Iliana Iotova was elected to the National Assembly. This is like the parliament of Bulgaria, where laws are made.
Serving in the European Parliament
In 2007, Iotova became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She was re-elected in 2014. As an MEP, she represented Bulgaria in the European Union's parliament. She was part of a political group called the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.
Working on Key Issues in Europe
While in the European Parliament, Iotova worked on several important committees. These committees focus on different topics.
- From 2007 to 2009, she was on the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.
- From 2009 to 2014, she served on the Committee on Fisheries and the Committee on Petitions.
- She also worked on a special committee about organized crime, corruption, and money laundering.
After the 2014 elections, she became the vice-chairwoman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. In this role, she helped write a report in 2015. This report suggested that 40,000 refugees should be shared fairly across the European Union.
Representing Bulgaria Abroad
Besides her committee work, Iotova led the parliament's group that worked with Montenegro. She was also part of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean. She was also a member of a group that worked on transparency and fighting corruption.
Becoming Vice President of Bulgaria
In 2016, Iliana Iotova was chosen as the running mate for presidential candidate Rumen Radev. They ran together in the 2016 Bulgarian presidential election. After they won the election, she became the Vice President of Bulgaria. She then resigned from her position as an MEP.
