Margarita Stefanova Popova (Bulgarian: Маргарита Стефанова Попова; born 15 May 1957) is a Bulgarian jurist, prosecutor, and educator. She served as the Vice President of Bulgaria from 2012 to 2017.

Before becoming Vice President, she was the Minister of Justice from July 2009 to September 2011. She worked in the government led by Boyko Borisov. In 2011, she ran for Vice President alongside Rosen Plevneliev. They won the election, and she started her term in January 2012.

Early Life and Education

Margarita Popova was born on May 15, 1957. She studied at the University of Sofia. In 1980, she earned a degree in Bulgarian philology. This means she studied the language and literature of Bulgaria.

Later, in 1989, she returned to the same university. She then graduated with a degree in law. Her education gave her a strong background in both language and legal matters.

Career as a Jurist and Prosecutor

After finishing her law studies, Margarita Popova began her career in the legal field. In 1990, she became a prosecutor in the town of Pirdop. A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government. Their job is to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes.

In 1991, she moved to Ruse and became a regional prosecutor there. From 1996 to 2006, she served as the administrative head and regional prosecutor for the Sofia district. This role involved managing legal cases and overseeing the work of other prosecutors.

Teaching and Public Service

Besides her work as a prosecutor, Margarita Popova also shared her knowledge with others. She was a lecturer at the National Police Academy from 2001 to 2004. Here, she likely taught future police officers about legal procedures.

From 2005 to 2009, she also taught at the National Institute of Justice. This institute trains judges, prosecutors, and investigators. Her teaching roles show her dedication to educating new legal professionals.
