Margarita Stefanova Popova (born 15 May 1957) is a Bulgarian expert in law and a teacher. She served as the Vice President of Bulgaria from 2012 to 2017.
Before becoming Vice President, she was the Minister of Justice. She held this important role from July 27, 2009, to September 4, 2011. She was part of the government led by Boyko Borisov. In October 2011, she ran for Vice President alongside Rosen Plevneliev, who was running for President. They won the election, and she officially started her term in January 2012.
Her Life and Career
Margarita Popova studied at the University of Sofia. In 1980, she earned a degree in Bulgarian philology, which is the study of language and literature. Later, in 1989, she also graduated with a law degree from the same university.
Her career in law began in 1990 when she became a prosecutor in Pirdop. A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes. In 1991, she became a regional prosecutor in Ruse. From 1996 to 2006, she was the administrative head and regional prosecutor for the Sofia district.
Besides her work as a prosecutor, Margarita Popova also shared her knowledge by teaching. She was a lecturer at the National Police Academy from 2001 to 2004. She also taught at the National Institute of Justice from 2005 to 2009.
