The Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria is an important job created by the Constitution of Bulgaria. It's the only active vice presidential role in the entire European Union (EU)!
The Vice President is chosen by people voting in an election, just like the President. Candidates for President and Vice President run together as a team. Once elected, they cannot hold any other government job.
The constitution says that the Vice President is the main helper to the President in their official duties.

The Vice President of Bulgaria works closely with the President. They help with many important tasks for the country. This role is similar to a vice president in other countries.
How the Vice President is Chosen
The Vice President is elected by the people of Bulgaria. This happens at the same time as the presidential election. Voters choose a President and Vice President pair. They serve a five-year term and can be re-elected once.
A Look at Bulgaria's Past Leaders
Before the current system, Bulgaria had different leaders. From 1971 to 1990, the country was led by "Chairmen of the State Council." These chairmen had "First Deputy Chairmen" who were like their assistants. The State Council was removed on April 3, 1990. After that, the role of Vice President was created.
