Todor Kolev Kavaldzhiev (Bulgarian: Тодор Колев Кавалджиев; born January 26, 1934 – died February 6, 2019) was an important political figure in Bulgaria. He served as the Vice President of Bulgaria from 1997 to 2002. He worked closely with Petar Stoyanov, who was the President at that time.
Todor Kavaldzhiev was known for being against the communist government that ruled Bulgaria for many years. He faced difficulties because of his beliefs during that time. He also worked hard to bring back a political group called BZNS Nikola Petkov.
Early Life and Challenges
Todor Kavaldzhiev was born in a village called Glavan, in Bulgaria, on January 26, 1934. When he was a teenager, he was very active in a political group known as BZNS. He wanted to restart a youth group connected to farming.
However, because of his political activities, he was arrested and put in prison in 1952. He spent 11 years in different prisons, including places like Pazardzhik and Stara Zagora. He was even sent twice to a tough labor camp called Belene. In 1963, he was finally released from prison.
After his release, Todor worked as a builder for a short time. He then decided to continue his education. Between 1966 and 1970, he studied economics in Svishtov. Three years later, he earned a degree in accounting. He worked in various jobs, including as a designer in a factory and later in forestry in his home village. He also worked as a chief accountant and an economist in different factories.
Journey into Politics
In 1989, a big change happened in Bulgaria. Todor Kavaldzhiev spoke publicly on the radio, asking the prime minister to allow his political group, BZNS Nikola Petkov, to operate again. He also asked for people who were unfairly treated because of their involvement with the group to be pardoned.
Soon after, he was elected as a People's Representative, which is a high political position. He became an important member of the BZNS Nikola Petkov party. From 1992, he took on the role of secretary in the party, meaning he helped manage its daily activities.
Todor Kavaldzhiev was one of the first people to openly talk about problems within another major political group, the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF). He later became a candidate for Vice President with the UDF. In 1996, he and Petar Stoyanov won the elections and became the new President and Vice President of Bulgaria.
As Vice President
As Vice President, Todor Kavaldzhiev worked to support President Petar Stoyanov. He often spoke out about corruption. He warned that former members of the communist government were taking control of businesses during privatization, sometimes causing them to fail. He served as Vice President until January 22, 2002.
