The elongate ilisha (pronounced ee-LIE-shah) is a type of fish. It's also known as the Chinese herring or slender shad. Even though it has these names, it's not a true herring or shad. This fish lives in the coastal waters and river mouths of the North Indian Ocean and the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
The elongate ilisha can grow quite large. It usually reaches about 45 to 60 centimeters (about 1.5 to 2 feet) in length. It is a very important fish for people who catch and sell seafood.
Life Cycle and Growth
The elongate ilisha grows and lives differently depending on where it lives. In the colder, northern parts of its home range, this fish grows up slower. It becomes an adult and can have babies when it is about 2 years old. These fish can live for about 6 years.
In the warmer, southern parts of its home range, the elongate ilisha grows faster. It becomes an adult in less than a year. Fish in these warmer areas usually live for about 3 years. Female elongate ilisha can lay many batches of eggs during their lives.
Fishing and How People Use It
The elongate ilisha is a popular fish caught by commercial fishing boats. This means it's caught to be sold in markets. Most of these fish are caught in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, especially by China.
Between the years 2000 and 2009, about 80,400 to 98,700 tonnes (that's a lot of fish!) were caught each year. People enjoy eating the meat of the elongate ilisha because it tastes good. However, it's known for having many small bones, so you have to be careful when eating it!
