Ilmajoki (pronounced IL-ma-yo-kee) is a town and municipality in Finland. It is located in the South Ostrobothnia region. Ilmajoki was officially founded in 1865.

It is home to about 12,000 people. The area covers around 580 square kilometers (224 square miles). Ilmajoki is known for its beautiful nature and open countryside. The Kyrönjoki River, a national landscape, flows through the area.

Ilmajoki is also famous for its annual Music Festival. Thousands of people gather there each June to enjoy opera. The town has a strong history of business and entrepreneurship. Ilmajoki has a long and interesting history. It used to be part of a larger area called Kyrö. In 1532, Ilmajoki became independent. It formed its own church parish. This was quite early compared to other areas nearby.

In 1867, Ilmajoki started operating as its own municipality. This happened when local government separated from the church.

The Cudgel War and Jaakko Ilkka

A very important event in Ilmajoki's history was the Cudgel War (1596–1597). This was a peasant uprising. Jaakko Ilkka, a local from Ilmajoki, led the peasants. He was a brave leader, but he was captured and executed in January 1597.

The biggest battle of this war, the Battle of Santavuori, took place in Ilmajoki. This battle happened in February 1597.

Traditional Buildings and Crafts
