A Church with History
The Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church has a long and interesting history. It started on January 22, 1906. Back then, it was called the Swedish Lutheran Church of the Augustana Synod.
Swedish Roots
The church was first created by Swedish immigrants. These were people who moved to America from Sweden. They wanted a church where they could worship in their own language. The church was part of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. This was a larger group of Lutheran churches. It was also started by Swedish immigrants.
Building the Church
The church building you see today was built in 1908. It took a few years to finish. The church was officially opened on September 22, 1915. For many years, church services were held in the Swedish language. This was because most of the people who started the church were from Scandinavia.
Changing with the Times
Over time, the church wanted to welcome more people. On October 1, 1918, they made a big decision. They decided to start holding church sermons in English. This helped Lutherans from other backgrounds feel welcome. In 1919, the church changed its name. It became the Boise Evangelical Lutheran Church. This removed the last link to its Swedish beginnings. In the 1950s, the church changed its name one more time. It became the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Today, it is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
