The Impression 5 Science Center is a super fun science museum in downtown Lansing, Michigan. It used to be called the Impression 5 Museum. This cool place is inside an old factory building right by the Grand River. The name Impression 5 means it's all about your five senses – like sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell! About 3,000 people visit the Impression 5 Science Center every week.
History of Impression 5
The Impression 5 Science Center was started by Marilynne Eichinger. She began it in her basement in Lansing, Michigan, in 1972. Marilynne was a mom of five kids. She wanted to create a place where science could be fun and easy to understand.
Her goal was to make hands-on exhibits. These exhibits would let visitors touch, explore, and think. The first idea for Impression 5 was to focus on the five senses. This way, everyone could learn in a way that worked best for them.
The museum's first home was in Marble School in East Lansing. Volunteers would take displays to schools and malls. They put on small science shows. In 1973, the museum rented a big warehouse. It was 15,000 square feet and filled with interactive displays.
Over time, the museum became very popular. It got money for new exhibits that could stay or travel to other places. Soon, the warehouse was too small! So, in 1982, Impression 5 moved to its current building. This building is 80,000 square feet and is in downtown Lansing.
Today, the center offers many things. These include classes, camps, and training for teachers. They also have programs that visit schools. In 1994, the Impression 5 Museum changed its name. It became the Impression 5 Science Center.
