The evergreen toad (also known as Incilius coniferus) is a type of toad that belongs to the Bufonidae family. These toads are known for their interesting colors and where they live.

Is the Evergreen Toad Safe?

The evergreen toad is currently listed as a least-concern species. This means that, for now, there are enough of them in the wild, and they are not in immediate danger of disappearing.

However, their homes are sometimes destroyed, which is called habitat loss. This could become a problem for them in the future. Experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature keep track of these toads to make sure they stay safe.

What Does the Evergreen Toad Look Like?

The evergreen toad is sometimes called the "green climbing toad." It can be many different colors, like brown, green, and even yellow. These colors form a special pattern on its back, which helps it blend in with its surroundings. Each toad has a unique pattern, almost like a fingerprint!

Its eyes are green and have pupils that look like a vertical slit, similar to a cat's eye.

Size and Differences Between Males and Females

Adult male evergreen toads are usually about 53 to 72 millimeters long. That's about the length of a few paperclips! Adult females are bigger, measuring about 76 to 94 millimeters.

It's easy to tell adult males and females apart because the males often have slightly brighter colors. However, when they are young tadpoles, both males and females look exactly the same. They only start to look different after they go through metamorphosis and become adult toads.

Where Do Evergreen Toads Live?

You can find the evergreen toad in several countries in Central and South America. These include Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Toad Habitats

These toads love to live in wet and moist forests that are not very high up. They are sometimes found in forests on the lower parts of mountains too.

Their favorite places to live include:

  • Moist lowland forests
  • Near rivers
  • Freshwater marshes (wetlands)
  • Gardens in the countryside
  • Even in urban areas (cities and towns)
  • Areas where forests used to be, but have changed

The Pacific Equatorial Forest is also a special home for these green toads.

How High Do They Live?

Evergreen toads can be found living at different heights, from sea level up to about 1,550 meters (which is about 5,085 feet) above sea level.
