Independence is a small community located in Preston County, West Virginia, United States. It is an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of the larger county, rather than having its own separate town government. Independence is right next to the town of Newburg.
The community got its name to celebrate Independence Day, a very important holiday in the United States.

Independence used to have its own public primary school. Today, children from Independence attend schools in the wider Preston County Public Schools system.
Fun Times: Watermelon Days
During the 1950s and 1960s, Independence was famous for its fun "Watermelon Days." These events brought lots of people together. They offered entertainment for families from Preston and Taylor counties. A big part of Watermelon Day was watching the different B&O trains arrive and leave. People also enjoyed swimming at a nearby spot called Fortney’s Mill.
