The Independence Gate (Korean: 독립문, 獨立門) is a special memorial gate in Seoul, South Korea. It was built to celebrate Korea's independence and freedom. The gate was designed by Seo Jae-pil, a famous Korean leader.

What is the Independence Gate?

The Independence Gate is a symbol of Korea's desire to be a strong, independent nation. It was built at a time when Korea was working to free itself from the influence of other powerful countries. This gate reminds everyone of Korea's journey to become truly independent.

Why was it built?

The gate was built in 1897. It replaced an older gate called Yeongeunmun, which was a symbol of Korea's past ties to China. The new Independence Gate showed that Korea was now looking forward to a future where it would make its own decisions. It was a big step for the country.

Who designed the gate?

The Independence Gate was designed by Seo Jae-pil. He was a very important person in Korean history. Seo Jae-pil was a doctor, a journalist, and a politician. He believed strongly that Korea should be a modern and independent country. He also helped start the first Korean newspaper written entirely in Hangul, the Korean alphabet.

Location and Design

The Independence Gate is located in Seodaemun District in Seoul. It looks a bit like a triumphal arch, which is a type of monument built to celebrate victories.

What does it look like?

The gate is made of granite, a strong stone. It has a large arch in the middle that people can walk through. On top of the arch, you can see the words '독립문' (Dongnimmun), which means Independence Gate in Korean. There is also a carving of the Taegukgi, the Korean flag, and a symbol of the House of Yi, the royal family of the Joseon dynasty.

Has it always been in the same place?

The Independence Gate was moved slightly from its original spot in 1979. This was done to make way for a new road. However, it is still very close to where it was first built, near the Plinths of Yeongeunmun Gate, Seoul.
