Indian Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Texas, United States. It's located in the southern part of Brown County. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In 2000, there weren't any official numbers for how many people lived there. Indian Creek is also part of the larger area around Brownwood, Texas.

A Look Back: Indian Creek's History

Indian Creek got its name because it's located right next to a stream called Indian Creek. In 1876, a post office opened in a general store there. By 1879, the community had two stores, a machine that separated cotton fibers (called a cotton gin), and a blacksmith shop.

Over time, the number of people living in Indian Creek changed. In 1945, there were 60 residents, with two businesses and a church. By 1988, the population had dropped to 28. In 2000, there were no official population numbers. Even so, Indian Creek and its cemetery are still shown on county maps today. The cemetery is located about three miles north of the community.

Where is Indian Creek?

Indian Creek is found in southern Brown County, Texas. It's located along Farm to Market Road 586. This road is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of a larger town called Brownwood.

Schools and Learning

The very first school in Indian Creek was built in 1876. It was located on a piece of land owned by Tom McAden. This school continued to operate for many years, even in 1945.

Later, in 1948-1949, the school joined the Brookesmith Independent School District. The old ruins of that first school building can still be seen in the community today. Students in Indian Creek are still served by the Brookesmith Independent School District.

Interestingly, Howard Payne University actually started in Indian Creek in 1889. However, it later moved to the nearby city of Brownwood.
