Indian Gardens is a small community located in Coconino County, Arizona, in the United States. It's found on the east side of Oak Creek Canyon, just north of the town of Sedona. This area is quite high up, about 4,603 feet (1,403 meters) above sea level.

History of Indian Gardens

Early Settlers and Naming

The first European-American settler to live in the Sedona area was a man named John James Thompson. He made his home at Indian Gardens in 1876. Thompson decided to call the place "Indian Gardens" because he saw that native people were already growing crops like corn and squash there. This shows that the land was fertile and important for farming long ago.

Community Efforts and Improvements

As more people moved to the area, they faced common challenges. In 1965, the people living on the east side of Oak Creek decided to work together. They formed a group called the Indian Gardens Improvement Association.

Solving Local Problems

The main reason they started this association was to fix local problems. One of the biggest issues was a bridge that had been washed away. This broken bridge made it very hard for property owners to get to their homes. By working together, the association aimed to rebuild the bridge and improve access for everyone in the community.
