Indian Lake is a cool, man-made lake located in central Indiana, in a place called Marion County. It's about 5 miles northeast of a big city, Indianapolis. This lake was created a long time ago, in 1929, by building a dam across a stream called Indian Creek.

What is Indian Lake?

Indian Lake is a special kind of lake called a reservoir. A reservoir is a lake that people create, usually by building a dam across a river or stream. They do this to store water for different uses, like drinking water or for fun activities.

Where Can You Find Indian Lake?

Indian Lake is located in the middle part of Indiana, within Marion County. It's pretty close to the state's capital city, Indianapolis. You can find it just a short drive, about 5 miles, to the northeast of downtown Indianapolis.

How Was Indian Lake Created?

Indian Lake isn't a natural lake. It was made by people in 1929. Engineers built a dam across a small river called Indian Creek. This dam held back the water from the creek, causing it to spread out and form the lake we see today. Indian Creek is a smaller stream that eventually flows into a larger one called Fall Creek.

Indian Lake's Past Importance

For many years, Indian Lake was the biggest body of water in central Indiana. It held this title until other, even larger, reservoirs were built. For example, Geist Reservoir was created in 1943, and Eagle Creek Reservoir was made in 1967. These newer, bigger lakes eventually took over as the largest in the area.
