Indian Lake Chain, Ontario facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Indian Lake Chain is a group of lakes connected to each other, found in Ontario, Canada. These lakes are a popular spot for visitors, especially for fishing and enjoying nature. The chain gets its name from one of its main lakes, Indian Lake. It's located northwest of a small community called Vermilion Bay in the Kenora District.

What is the Indian Lake Chain?

The Indian Lake Chain is a series of lakes that are all linked together. Imagine a string of pearls, but instead of pearls, they are lakes! This makes it easy for boats to travel from one lake to another.

How Many Lakes are in the Chain?

Different maps show slightly different numbers of lakes in the chain.

  • Maps from local resorts say there are ten lakes:
    • Little Boulder Lake
    • Boulder Lake
    • Cobble Lake
    • Bladder Lake
    • Big Moose Lake
    • Little Moose Lake
    • Whitney Lake
    • Edward Lake
    • Indian Lake
    • Forrest Lake
  • However, the official Atlas of Canada map lists only seven lakes. This is because it groups Little Boulder, Boulder, Cobble, and Bladder Lakes all together as "Cobble Lake."

Lake Levels and Elevation

The lakes in the Indian Lake Chain are about 377 meters (1,237 feet) above sea level. This height is kept steady by a special structure called the Forest Lake Dam. Dams help control the water level, making sure it doesn't get too high or too low.

Fishing in the Indian Lake Chain

Fishing is one of the most popular activities for people visiting the Indian Lake Chain during the summer. The lakes are home to many different kinds of fish, making it a great place for anglers (that's what we call people who fish!).

What Fish Can You Catch?

You can find several exciting fish species in these lakes:

  • Walleye: These are popular fish, sometimes called "pickerel" by local people. They are known for being tasty!
  • Muskellunge (Muskie): These are large, powerful fish that are a real challenge to catch. They are often called the "fish of 10,000 casts" because they can be tricky to hook!
  • Pike: Another type of large, predatory fish with sharp teeth.
  • Smallmouth Bass: These fish are known for putting up a good fight when caught, making them fun for sport fishing.
  • Lake Trout: A type of trout that lives in cold, deep lakes.
