Indian Lakes Estates is a small community in Madera County, California. It's not an official city or town, but a place where people live together. It is located near the Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino and the town of Coarsegold.

This community is surrounded by woods and has about 485 homes. Many families and retired people live here. Road 417 is the main road they use. Indian Lakes Estates sits high up, about 2,247 feet (685 meters) above sea level.

A Look at Indian Lakes Estates' Past

Long ago, the area where Indian Lakes Estates is now was called Picayune. There was even a mining town named Narbo here from 1883 to 1887.

How the Community Started

In 1966, a developer named Jeff Dennis started promoting Indian Lakes Estates. He said it would have "18 miles of shoreline," suggesting there would be a big lake. However, just two years later, a newspaper reported that building hadn't even started. It also noted that "No lake is visible."

Getting Clean Water

In 1986, the people living in Indian Lakes Estates wanted to take over their water system. They believed their water source might not be safe. The local government in Madera County agreed to their request.

Indian Lakes Estates and the Chukchansi Tribe

The Indian Lakes Estates community is close to the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians and their Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino. The two groups often work together on local issues.

Working with the Casino

In 2003, local residents were concerned about the casino's plans. They worried it would use too much groundwater, which is water found underground. This water is important for everyone in the area.

Community Grants and Improvements

In 2014, the Indian Lakes Estates Property Owners Association asked the Chukchansi tribe for a grant. They wanted $135,643 to improve fire safety and build a playground. The casino had to close for a short time, which delayed the request. It reopened in 2015.

Later, in 2018, the association received a $25,000 grant from the Chukchansi. They used this money to build a brand new playground at the Park Pavilion in Indian Lakes. This new playground is a fun place for kids in the community to play.
