India is a huge country, and it has a very important leader called the President. The President is the head of the country, a bit like a principal is the head of a school. They make sure everything runs smoothly and represent India to the rest of the world. Every few years, India holds an election to choose its President.

India's 1957 Presidential Election

On May 6, 1957, India held its second-ever presidential election. This was an important event for the young country. The Election Commission of India, which is like the referee for elections, organized the whole process.

How the President is Chosen

In India, the President isn't chosen directly by all citizens. Instead, they are elected by special representatives. These representatives are the Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) from all the states. This way of voting is called an indirect election. It means the people vote for their local leaders, and those leaders then vote for the President.

Who Ran for President?

There were a few people who wanted to be President in 1957. The main candidates were:

  • Rajendra Prasad: He was already the President and hoped to win again.
  • Chowdhry Hari Ram: Another candidate who wanted the top job.
  • Nagendra Narayan Das: He also ran for President.

The Election Results

When all the votes were counted, Dr. Rajendra Prasad won by a lot! He received a massive 459,698 votes. His rivals, Chowdhry Hari Ram, got 2,672 votes, and Nagendra Narayan Das received 2,000 votes. This big win meant Dr. Rajendra Prasad would continue to be India's President.

A Special Achievement

Dr. Rajendra Prasad's victory in 1957 was very special. He became the only person in India's history to be elected President twice and serve two full terms. This shows how much trust and support he had from the country's representatives.
