Part of a National Park
Indigo Lake is completely inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This park is a special area protected by the government. The lake was created from an old gravel and sand pit called Gray's Quarry.
How the Lake Was Made
The National Park Service took over Gray's Quarry on December 27, 1974. This happened when the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was formed. Park workers later filled the pit with water. This is how Indigo Lake was created. Natural springs in the area keep the lake full of water all the time.
Fun Activities at the Lake
Indigo Lake is a popular place for fishing. Even though it's part of a national park, swimming is not allowed here. It's one of only two spots in the park where you can't swim.
In winter, the lake usually freezes over. When it does, the Akron Fire Department uses the frozen lake to practice rescuing people from under the ice. This helps them stay ready for emergencies.
Getting to Indigo Lake
You can reach Indigo Lake in a few ways:
- By car, from Riverview Road.
- By walking on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
- By train, using a flag stop station nearby. This station is part of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
